Respiration and Geotropism in Vicia Faba. I
نویسنده
چکیده
In this paper there are given the results of a study of the relation of respiration to temperature, in seedlings of Vicia faba, and of the onset of geotropic response. It is shown that with due care and very accurate control of temperature constancy, one can get constant excretion of CO(2) even over fairly long periods. The treatment of the experimental data shows that the Q(10) ratio is of course a valueless "constant," as it is variable; but that the figure obtained for micro, the temperature characteristic (critical thermal increment), 16,250, is perfectly consistent with the values previously obtained for micro in respiratory oxidative processes in similar material. New data on the reaction time for the root of Vicia faba seedlings excited geotropically are given also. The study of the dependence of this time relation on temperature shows micro = 16,110, agreeing quantitatively with the value deduced previously from the relevant data of earlier investigators (Crozier, 1924). This points to the importance of some respiratory oxidative process as the agency controlling the onset of geotropic curvature.

Strandedness of Vicia Faba Chromosomes as Revealed by Enzyme Digestion Studies
Chromosomes and nuclei isolated from neutral formalin-fixed Vicia faba lateral roots were treated with trypsin, pepsin, RNase, or DNase. Only trypsin affected the morphology of the chromosomes and nuclei. The appearance of the chromosomes after trypsin digestion indicated that each chromatid contained four strands that could be seen with an ordinary light microscope. The experiments are interpr...
متن کاملEffect of Low Root Medium pH on Net Proton Release, Root Respiration, and Root Growth of Corn (Zea mays L.) and Broad Bean (Vicia faba L.).
The effect of low pH on net H(+) release and root growth of corn (Zea mays L.) and broad bean (Vicia faba L.) seedlings was investigated in short-term experiments at constant pH. Broad bean was more sensitive to low pH than corn: the critical values (pH values below which net H(+) release and root growth ceased) were pH 4.00 (broad bean) and pH 3.50 (corn) at 1 millimolar Ca(2+). Both proton re...
متن کاملEnvironmental and genotypic effects on the respiration associated with symbiotic nitrogen fixation in peas.
Estimated values for the respiration associated with symbiotic nitrogen fixation in Pisum sativum L. were independent of irradiance, temperature, plant age, and CO(2) concentration, despite large variation in the total rates of C(2)H(2) reduction and root + nodule respiration. Similar values were also found in Phaseolus vulgaris L., Vicia faba L. and Glycine max (L.) Merr. Among all combination...
